６月と言えば、もう初夏、のはず。

でも、窓の外はいまだその気配を感じられず。。。そんな曇り空の下、太陽のように輝いてくれるマリーゴールドは、季節をしっかりと伝えてくれています。

We are now in the middle of June, which is supposed to be the beginning of SUMMER... however, the reality is far from it. Well, at least, these cheerfully bright Marigolds are reminding me of the season.

先日からご案内させていただいている、シュウ富岡さんによる写真教室。第二回の開催が決定いたしました。このような方から直接指導を受けることが出来るというのは、滅多にない機会だと思います。写真にご興味をお持ちの方だけでなく、新しい事を始めて見ようとお考えの方にも、ぴったりの講座になると思います。

The professional photographer, Shu Tomioka, is now running a photography classes in Hampstead - I took the previous lesson, and it was full of new discovery. このページの１枚目と２枚目の写真、同じものなのですが、シュウさんの講座で教えていただいた事を参考にちょっと調整。こうしたテクニックを、たっぷりと伝えてくれる、本当に贅沢な講座です。
Thanks to Shu's lesson, I can edit photos I took now - the 1st and 2nd pictures here are the same - the 2nd one was tweeked a little bit. Do you think it is better? I hope so...

Garden Open for Charity - 週末は、庭を歩いて、、、

。。。というわけで、ハイゲートにあるこの庭は、それはそれは夢のような場所でした。入口からすぐ、ロンドンの高層ビルを眼下に臨む事が出来、そこから足を進めるたび、目の前に広がってくるのは深い森の色。隠れ家のようにしつらえられたベンチでお茶とケーキを楽しむ人。水の経る道でカエルを探す子供達。そしてその植生の美しさに、ずーっとうんうん唸っていました。

６月にもう一回だけ、公開されるとのことです。

... which led me to this simply dreamy garden in Highgate in London. Once you walked in to the site, a panoramic view over London skyscrapers welcomed you. Then, the path took me to a bosom of a deep forest with different shades of green. Some hidden benches were occupied by people enjoying a nice cuppa and a slice of cake, children were seeking for frogs in a pond. Me? I was completely speechless, as if being shot by unexpected delight on every single step, and kept finding myself mumbling Mmmmm..... Ahhhhhhh........Woah......

The garden will be open only one more time in June this year.

そして遠足へ。。。And here we were in a forest of ROSES...

あのまっすぐな茎は、どのように育ってくれるのか。。。。？

花首を糸で吊り上げていると言う噂は、本当なのか。。。。？

どうして茎の長さが、そして花の大きさが揃えられるのか。。。。？

新鮮な花を、新鮮なまま届けるにはどうしたらいいのか。。。。？

松阪牛を育てるように、大切な花にはビールを飲ませてマッサージをする。。。。？

How could you get those straight stems....?

Is it true that each flower head is tied and pulled upwards.....?

Why do those roses have the same stem length and same head size.....?

 What is the secret to keep them fresh for longer period of time.....?

Is that true that flowers being offered beer and massaged, just like  famous Matsuzaka beef.....?

冬の風からしっかり守られたハウスの中は、まるで童話に出てくるイバラの森。

もちろんカエルだっています。

The house is fending the bitter winter off, and it is as if we were wandering into a rambling brier in a fairy tale. Of course, we have a frog.

そして、なぜかバナナやパパイヤまで。
We saw some bananas and Papayas, too...why?

数えきれぬ程の、そしてはかりきれぬ程の手間と愛情がかけられているこのハウス。お忙しい中、たくさんの疑問を丁寧に解きほぐしてくださった丸山バラ園さま。ご招待いただき、本当にありがとうございました。

柔らかな笑顔に包まれた、気持ちが温かくなる遠足でした。It was cold outside, but we felt so much warmer on our way back from this firm...

豆まき、済みましたか？- Hello to a new SPRING!

 今年も、もうすぐバレンタイン。

日本ではチョコレート、イギリスではバラの花束が街中を飛び回るまであとちょっと。

そして、庭ではバラの剪定の時期です。先月、雪がたくさん降って、その上にどっしりと積もる様子は、痛々しかった。。。

あの雪の前にすませておけば良かった、と今だから言えること。天気予報、もっとしっかりチェックしておくべきでした。

冬の曇り空の中、今年も、がっつり。

 春になって、再びしっかり伸びてくる事を祈りながら。

明日は、立春です。

また今年、咲いてくれますように。

Valentine's Day is just around the corner now.

Boxes of chocolate in Japan, and bunches of roses will be flying through every street corners. 

But, in a garden with roses, it is the time for pruning. 

How did you feel when you say that thick snow laid on plants in your garden? Yes, it was painful...

I should have checked the weather forecast, then could have trimmed roses before that snow.

Today, under the winter grey sky, the size of rose plants in the garden has been shrank dramatically: snipping and wishing for healthy grow back.

A new SPRING is going to be with us tomorrow.

遠足のお誘い - Can I come with you?

田舎に育ったおかげで、お米がどんな過程を経て育つのかとか、野菜が栽培されている姿とか、落花生は土の中にできるとか、植物の育つ姿を見る機会には恵まれています。
Have you seen how rice grow? How about vegetables being cultivated in big scale? Did you know that peanuts grow in the soil? I know, I know, you know...But, I think this is some of the perks you do have if you happen to grow up in country side. Me? Yes!

。。。。。。。でも、花が栽培されている姿には、縁がございませんでした。（チューリップ畑とか菜の花畑に行った事はあるものの、そこでの花はどっちかって言うと副産物的な扱いとなるようなので）花を中心と据える栽培の場面には、以前から是非行ってみたいと思っていました。花市場で花を買う時には、もう綺麗に切り揃えられて、既によそ行き顔の様子。一体、どういう感じで育ててもらっているんだろうかと、前から不思議でした。

 と、そんなある日、いつも仲良くしてもらっている、そしていつか追いついて行きたいと目標にしている花仲間の花のお店、くりの木店長さんより
“バラの栽培農家さん、見せてもらう機会があるけど、行く？”とメールを頂きまして、もう迷う事なく“連れて行って下さい”とお願いしました。（彼女のブログも必読です！彼女の事は、改めて後日ゆっくりと。すごいフローリストなんです。）


というわけで、嬉しい遠足に行って来ました。

こんなにきれいに咲いているんです！Ah......so, so beautiful!

コーヒーブレークって言う品種だそうです。欲しい！A cultivar called Coffee Break - I wanted it!

夏の庭を思い出させてくれた、いい匂いのするバラ（名前失念。。。）
Its scent reminded me of summer garden. (foolish of me to lose its cultivar name...)

Even though I was grown up right next to a rice field, I did not have any chance to see roses being commercially cultivated. All the flowers we encounter at the market are normally cut in the same size, bundled, and neatly packed. I was always wondering how they were BEFORE they arrive at the market. 

Then, one day, one of my great colleagues, my long-standing friend and someone I always admire, Flower shop Kuri-no-Ki kindly sent me a truly wonderful invitation to a rose farm! (By the way, her blog is a must-read if you love flowers! I will write about her another day...)

So, I went out for a day to meet those roses.
